A fundamental component of karate is your karate footwork which enhances balance, agility, and skillful application of techniques. Learning and practicing fundamental footwork is essential for beginners because it allows you to move quickly and fluidly while keeping your balance and being ready to attack or defend.
Karate footwork is essentially about optimising your stance, whether you’re going sideways, forwards, or backwards. It requires changing your weight and position. Footwork improves your defensive skills by enabling you to rapidly avoid attacks, in addition to increasing your capacity to deliver potent techniques.
The key to learning footwork is to integrate and move between the basic stances, Kokutsu-dachi (back or fighting stance), Zenkutsu-dachi (front stance), as well as Neko Ashi Dachi (Short or Cat stance). Kiba or Shika dachi( Horse stance) will give grounded stability on the spot.
